Colorectal cancer (“CRC”) is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the U.S. Approximately 1 in 20 people will be diagnosed with CRC. Even Though 90% of CRCs are found in people over the age of 50, anyone at any age can get CRC. Unfortunately, that was the grim reality for our good friend, Jason Bauer, who was diagnosed at the age of 41. Jason has undergone 7 surgeries, 16 chemo treatments, 45 radiation sessions, and a permanent colostomy. Jason’s last surgery revealed a tumor too invasive to be completely removed. Jason is an avid recreational cyclist and skateboarder. He has no family history of CRC, was in perfect health, didn’t smoke, maintained a healthy diet, and exercised regularly– if it could happen to him, it could happen to you! You can lower your own risk for developing CRC by knowing your family history/risk factors, and by taking any signs/symptoms seriously and insisting on screening. Everyone has heard how important it is to get a colonoscopy after turning 50, but little attention is paid to screening for younger people. By 2030, CRC cases are expected to increase up to 124% among people ages 20-34 years, and by 46% among those ages 35-50.
